Ebay & Online Auctions

Ebay
The best known online auction company in the world is Ebay. Ebay conducts ongoing auctions of everything from home appliances and clothing to sports memorabilia and rare coins.
Ebay of course has a great deal of experience in the online auction business, but it has not been without controversy. While Ebay does have in place a system of rating sellers and buyers, this system has proven to be far from perfect. On Ebay virtually anyone can sell coins and it is not a simple matter for a novice to determine whether they are dealing with an established, professional coin dealer or another collector of limited experience.
We find the most important thing to understand is that there are no bargains. All too often, a coin purchased as "certified" is one that is not nationally recognized by the coin marketplace. Bidders have fallen into a trap by buying "less than adequate" coins in foreign certification holders (or inserts) only to find later on their purchase does not meet the criteria of those nationally recognized grading services, such as ANACS, ICG, NGC or PCGS. Hopefully, such a lesson learned is not too expensive.
Still, Ebay has become an active marketplace with in the numismatic community and many values are to be had there for the informed and educated coin enthusiast.
