Coin Wholesalers
In many cases, retail dealers obtain the coins that they sell to the public from wholesalers. Collectors and investors can often do business directly with these wholesalers, though finding them and contacting them has not always been straightforward.
Of course, the internet has changed much of that. Historically, coin wholesalers have not spent money on advertising and have not operated sales forces to deal directly with the public. However, with the internet, coin wholesalers can make their inventory available directly to the public, as they have made it available to retailers for many years.
This means that an investor or collector who takes the time to research and shop around can find coins at lower prices by dealing directly with wholesalers.
There are negatives in dealing directly with a wholesaler as well. Wholesalers are usually not positioned to educate and inform investors and collectors, since they deal mainly with other coin dealers who know exactly what they want to buy, when they want to buy it and sometimes how much they should be willing to pay for it. Individual investors and collectors are rarely in such a position and usually need advice about what to buy and when to buy it.
