Collect by Series and Type
A complete series collection concentrates on one design type and can include an example of each denomination and possibly mintmark. For instance, a Seated Liberty style collection includes an example of each design struck from 1838 through 1891, and from each of the four mints that produced the coins (Philadelphia, New Orleans, San Francisco and Carson City).
Collecting by type is very challenging and truly popular. There is a vast array of coin designs from which to choose. Regular United States Mint Coinage began with the Copper Cents and Half Cents of 1793. The Early Copper coinage is among the most coveted of all American coins today and has an enormous following of very serious collectors. There is extensive literature on the subject, as well and sophisticated collectors resort to this research to collect these copper coins by die variety. Silver coinage began in 1794 and eventually included Dollars, Half Dollars, Quarters, Dimes, Half Dimes and the tiny Three Cents of 1851-1873. While some collect individual denominations by date or mint, many other collectors prefer to assemble a Type Collections, trying to obtain a representative of each major design of each denomination of U.S. coin. A Type Collection of Silver Dollars, for example, would feature the Flowing Hair, Draped Bust, Liberty Seated, Trade, Morgan, Peace, Eisenhower, Susan B. Anthony and Sacageawea Dollars, spanning the years 1794 to present. A Type Collection of Dimes would include the Flowing Hair, Draped Bust, Capped Bust, Liberty Seated, Barber, Mercury and Roosevelt designs. One could even go a step further and add the pattern designs.
Within this category one can further focus by era, i.e. 18th century, 19th century and 20th century type collections, in both Business Strike and Proof Strikes. Such collections are a superb presentation of American history and form a living monument to our illustrious heritage.
